*Movie Review* - "Killer Elite" (2011)

When a movie claims to be "based on a true story," I always give it enough leeway to be a good film. "The Exorcist" was said to be based on a true story as well, but I really doubt that anyone's head spun all the way around in real life.

"Killer Elite" is said to be based on the true story of the British SAS special forces involvement in the Middle East in the 1980's. I did not read Ranulph Fiennes' book, so I don't know how he portrays the events. But I do know that much of what goes on in this movie requires a serious suspension of disbelief.

Jason Statham and Clive Owen start loudly pummeling each other in a hospital, Statham pulls the fire alarm and then is allowed to walk out of the hospital. No one called the cops and hospital security never even investigated the extremely loud noises coming from the room that was just feet from a doorway to a very busy hallway. I know it is details, but things like this ruin movies for me sometimes.

Robert De Niro is barely in this movie, but when he is on screen he makes it count. You never get the feeling that you should trust De Niro's character throughout the entire movie. It isn't until it is almost over that you realize who's side he is really on. If all of the characters were played that well, then this movie may have been easier to take. But they weren't.

Statham plays a world traveling hit man who falls for some of the easiest tricks in the books. For a guy that makes his living killing people, Statham's character is awful trusting.

Clive Owen's character has absolutely no depth at all. He is apparently the only strong-arm field member of some secret organization made up of old SAS guys. This table full of really old men decides what needs to be done about things that are really none of their business, and then Owen's character goes out and does them.

But what gets confusing is that Owen's character has an ever-growing network of hired killers that call him boss and carry out these extravagant mercenary missions. Why is Clive Owen's character called "boss"? Are these people working full time for Owen's character? When Owen's character decides to go rogue, where does he get the money to carry on this huge network of people who do around the clock surveillance and kidnapping?

The whole thing has no substance, it just exists and then grows for no apparent reason.

That brings up another problem I had with this movie. Everything is on the surface. No one is working both sides of the debate and there is no super-secret ulterior motive running through the movie. The plot is very shallow and starts to drag towards the end.

The scenes jump around too much for me. Jason Statham's character infiltrates an SAS training barracks by jumping over a fence and just blending in. Statham looked like he hadn't shaved in two weeks while all of the SAS guys around him were completely clean shaven. Statham stuck out like a sore thumb and his character would have certainly stuck out as well.

If this was based on a true story, then the true story was really fragmented. The chase scenes are extremely cool and some of the kills are impressive as well. But the movie does not hold together at all and it becomes confusing to watch after a while.

This is like many other Jason Statham movies. If you turn your brain off for two hours then this movie is fun to watch. But once you start thinking about it, it really does not feel like it is based on a true story at all.

MCA gung-ho only when it comes to talking, says Tee Keat

Saturday, 01 October 2011 08:42

Written by Malaysia Chronicle

The MCA is on the path to irrelevance, its former president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said this week ahead of the party’s annual gathering this weekend.

He said the Barisan Nasional (BN) component has not heeded the push for reform that saw the party lose 25 of the 40 federal and 59 of the 90 state seats it contested in Election 2008.“MCA is still stuck in the mindset of being gung-ho with statements instead of delivering good governance. It is parroting old polemic rather than delivering reforms asked for by voters.

“If MCA continues on this same old path and psyche, then it is certainly headed for irrelevance. Some have bluntly said we are already irrelevant,” said Ong, who was deposed as MCA boss by Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek in a fractious power struggle 18 months ago.

The Pandan MP cited, as examples of “empty platitudes,” his successor’s threats to quit BN if Umno implemented hudud and to resign from the Cabinet and other government posts if the party does not improve in a general election expected soon.

“I don’t see how his threats can lift the party from its doldrums,” he said.

The party holds what is likely to be its final general assembly this weekend before federal polls are called.

But despite having three presidents in as many years, the MCA has seen Chinese support continue to shrink in by-elections.

Some analyses state that the Tenang polls held earlier this year saw just 18 per cent of Chinese voting for BN.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak has begun taking over the charge for Chinese votes, spending last weekend dishing out RM15 million to Chinese schools and exempting a Community Chest project headed by Chinese tycoons from tax to help it channel RM100 million a year into vernacular education.

“Najib as BN chief is spearheading initiatives to win Chinese votes, triggering the question of ‘where is MCA?’ from the public,” Ong said.

He said the MCA could not shirk its responsibility as part of government despite Umno’s seniority in the ruling coalition.

“How are they justifying their position as minister? Chinese want a level playing field. Ministers must get rid of cronies and monopolies,” he said.

Ong cited his 26-month tenure as transport minister where he opened the probe on the RM12.5 billion Port Klang Free Zone scandal even though senior officers told him it was a closed case.

“I put aside considerations of whether or not it would implicate Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik or Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy,” he said of the former MCA president and deputy who were Ong’s predecessors as transport minister.

“I was more concerned about how the party had been linked to that debacle which was a key factor in the March 2008 tsunami,” he added, referring to the BN’s landmark loss of its customary two-thirds majority in Parliament and five state governments.

But, he said, the reforms he tried to implement in the party and in the Transport Ministry, now headed by MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, “all went down the drain” after he was ousted.

He also said he tried to caution Datuk Seri Ng Yen Yen whose tourism projects such as the RM1.8 million spent on developing six Facebook tourism campaigns have been repeatedly questioned.

“Taxpayers have every reason to ask, how can you justify your presence in that portfolio?” he said of the tourism minister, who was also criticised last year when Parliament revealed that she slashed her tourism promotional budget but increased spending on her official trips abroad.

Ng also came under fire after Tourism Malaysia’s former advertising agency alleged that the ministry had asked for bribes in exchange for a promotion contract.

“I admit that I failed to convince the party to change its mindset,” he said of his 18 months in charge of the MCA.

Shut Up Snow Complainers

"Topping tonight's Eyewitness News: Could it snow in the southtowns this weekend?" Yes, you idiot. It probably will. Why? Because this is Western New York and (news flash!) it snows up here!

There is nothing more annoying than watching the top story on a local Western New York newscast being an insignificant amount of snowfall, delivered by someone who probably is not even from Western New York. If we are expecting a "wrath of God" October-style snow storm then that is worth noting. But a couple of inches falling in areas world famous for snow is idiotic.

This is the time of the year where those of us that love the year-round weather in Western New York get to listen to people bitch about the snow. You can vote in a new mayor or common council, but snow is falling in Western New York regardless of who you put in office.

Remember one thing snow complainers, the snow is the reason why it is cheap enough to live in Western New York that you can afford your beat up 1989 pick up truck held together by duct tape and elegant flannel wardrobe with strategically placed holes in it. If you don't like the snow, then move. But be prepared to work a lot of extra hours at the Wal-Mart to afford a view of the sun 12 months out of the year.

The best part about snow complainers is that they act like this white and cold residue falling from the sky is something new. "Can you believe it is snowing already? In October?" Yes, dipshit. I can believe it. Why? Because I have lived in Western New York my entire life and know that it snows here! It isn't a surprise to me and it shouldn't be a surprise to you!

I am pretty sure the same thing happens in all parts of the country that experience a weather change in the winter. I would be willing to bet that there are people in Minnesota who are sick of hearing the question "Can you believe how cold it is?" every frigging winter. Yes! I can believe it! I live here! I know what to expect.

This is fall. How can you hate this?
There are also people that complain about fall. Seriously? Fall? If you prefer constant and oppressive heat with humidity in the high 90's then they have plenty of that in Florida. When you have sunk to the level of hating fall,  then you are definitely living in the wrong part of the country.

The best conversations are the ones between people who live in the southtowns and people who live in the city of Buffalo and areas north. It is really hard to find snow complainers in the southtowns of Western New York. Why? Because they know what they are getting into and have methods in place for dealing with the snow. They don't wake up on a January morning surprised by the amount of snowfall and then wonder what the hell they are going to do.

I am pretty sure that the first question a northtowns person asks a southtowns resident when they meet for the first time is "How do you deal with all of that snow?" Each time I have seen this exchange, the southtowns person gets that look on his face that just screams "idiotic question" before responding that he expects the snow and just deals with it.

If the problem is shoveling the snow, then there are probably at least a half dozen kids in your neighborhood that will shovel your walk for a few bucks. So that problem is solved. If it is the ice that builds up in your gutters and causes damage to your home that bothers you, then have some heating coils installed and that will solve that issue. If it is the constant cold, then move!

I would love to start a new trend of people in Florida, California and Texas who cannot stand these snow complainer transplants that bitch about the constant heat and humidity in the south. I have nothing against the people of Florida, California and Texas. I am just sick of the snow complainers and their bitching. Go bitch down south. I'm sure they would love you down there.

*Movie Review* - "Thor" (2011)

Let's establish something right off the bat; I love the Avenger movies and cannot wait for the first "Avenger" movie next year. Does that mean that this review may tend to be a bit biased? Possibly, but I still prefer a good movie over a steaming pile of garbage any day. I can see why all of the previous "Hulk" movies have failed. Avenger or not, the Hulk is boring. Hulk get mad, Hulk smash, movie over. Zzzzzz.

One of the advantages to having Stan Lee still alive and lucid is that he can contribute the necessary character elements to all of these Marvel movies. The casting has also been exceptional throughout the Avenger movies so far. Robert Downey Jr. is perfect as Iron Man. Chris Hemsworth is perfect as Thor. It really helps a movie to have good casting. For an example of casting gone wrong, watch anything that stars Nicholas Cage.

One of the things I have liked about all of the Avenger movies is that, while they are all essential to establishing the full "Avenger" franchise, none of them feel forced like the fourth and fifth "Harry Potter" movies did. "Thor" does an excellent job of presenting the story of Thor ala Marvel Comics without making it feel like they needed to make a movie so here it is.

It was obvious that there was a lot of work put into creating the visual Asgard sets and images. But, for some reason, Asgard still looks like a two-dimensional painting to me. It would not be so bad if it were not for the fact that Jotunheim (home of the Frost Giants) looked significantly more realistic than Asgard did.

But, visually, the rest of the movie was fun to watch. It is not going to win any Oscars because none of the Avenger movies will win any Oscars. But this was a fun movie to watch. One of the things I was worried about was the brilliance of Sir Anthony Hopkins overshadowing the rest of the cast. But everyone seemed to be able to keep up, and maybe that is what made this movie so enjoyable.

This is one I would definitely get on Blu-Ray if I were you. Get yourself comfortable, crank up the surround sound and enjoy the movie.

What to Expect

Welcome to my memoirs! Now get the hell off my lawn!
I have a lot of old content I am going to be bringing here along with at least one new piece every day. The old content will be mostly movie reviews I have done just because I would like to put them someplace where people will read them.

Every once in a while, Mr. Cratchit will chime in with his opinions which most of you can summarily dismiss. But it was either let him post or face another sleepless night looking at a past that I wanted to forget for a reason!

If you have any ideas, opinions or input then keep them to yourself! But, if you insist on sending me more emails to delete, my contact information is on here somewhere. Bah.

So, welcome. I hope you enjoy yourself but, in reality, I don't really care. And if you are reading this while you are supposed to be working then get back to work! Stop putting your hands into your employer's pockets! Lazy rabble.

Poem: Midnight Hour

Late at night when everyone else is sleep
I like to lay and fantasize about a life I wish I could lead
I don’t focus on the money, fancy clothes or cars
I don’t even think about becoming some sort of superstar
I think about a person whom I can call mine, whose there for me and I’m there for
Even when they give me what I need, leaves me wanting more
Never getting enough, I want that love that never shifts nor fades
I don’t want a night of passion, waking up alone-wishing he’d stayed
I dream of having the “one”; while others chose to think they met them multiple times
I just want that one man…..that I can know without a doubt is all mines.
Kind, caring, compassionate, sincere, honorable, trusting, and respectful- all key traits
I want somebody to go over and beyond- to the reasonably extent; to make us work & be happy- do all it takes
Not just laying it down in the bedroom, or looking like the king he is- although those weigh in my circumstance
I’m hoping he can embody the mindset of a leader, protector, and provider. I’m not looking for a young child or boy_ I want a Man
Committed to making everyday better than the day before it; giving attention and good at receiving it as well
I realize love is complex; there’s good and bad times-but I surely don’t want to be in a living hell
More than anything, while I’m laying there….alone…holding onto the pillow as if it’s the arms of my fantasy man
I can’t help but remember and focus on being alone. Maybe this is god’s divine plan.
I know I shouldn’t wish for things I don’t want to happen, so I treed softly in the area of love
I’ve tried making decisions involving my heart before, but I’ve failed- so I think it should be determined by the man above.
The lessons learned in the past will transform my future, as well as help me pick better partners
Love isn’t to be played with; it’s what gives us life. It’s an artform
So as the clock strikes 3 am and I realize my fantasy should end here so I can sleep
I regain my composure and don’t let a temporary moment of temptation leave me a lifetime of regret or pain from deceit

*Mayweather-Pacquaio fight update*

ESPN's Jim Rome reported on his show today that Manny Pacquaio's camp is saying the boxer has agreed to submit to Olympic style testing if a fight against Floyd Mayweather is negotiated. For those who are unaware, previous negotiations to schedule a fight between the two fighters stalled because the Mayweather camp suspects Pacquaio has doped up for some of his fights; thus requesting the unusual Olympic testing, which isn't used in boxing. Pacquaio, on the other hand, has maintained he is completely clean, but is petrified of needles. Pacquaio offered to acquiesce to Mayweather's request if the testing is done earlier in the week of the fight; no more than two days prior. Pacquaio said he wouldn't want to give up any psychological edge to Mayweather by taking a needle the day of his fight.

I have no idea why Pacquaio's trepidation would have such an effect on him, but it isn't anyone's place to question someone's fear of anything. But it appears, Pacquaio's now ready to do whatever it takes to make this fight happen and I commend him for that. Way to step up. Now it's up to Mayweather to step up as well.

What do you think? Will there be a fight in the next year? Share your thoughts.

Floyd Mayweather Wins....Hands Down

Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Victor Ortiz: Character Inside the Ring and a Fight Town's Legacy

By Randy De La O

There is an age old adage in boxing that goes something like this, "You are never so naked as when you are standing in the ring". It's not the physical nakedness they are referring to, it's the character of a man (or a women) that's exposed. Your courage and heart and sense of fair play, and your ability or inability to handle pressure, or the propensity to cheat when frustrated, or a lack of character when it's time to face your actions when caught. You are never so naked a when you are standing in the ring. Ask Victor Ortiz, he got caught completely naked last night.

125486843 LAS VEGAS, NV - SEPTEMBER 17: Victor Ortiz reaches his head out as Floyd Mayweather Jr. is against the rope in the fourth round during their WBC welterweight title fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on September 17, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  I'm no fan of Floyd Mayweather Jr, never have been and most likely, never will be. What I am is a fan of the sport of boxing. As difficult as that can be at times, especially when someone like Mayweather is involved, I do try my absolute best to put aside my own personal bias and dislikes and focus just on the fighter and the fights. It's not always easy. Saturday night's fight between Mayweather and Victor Ortiz is a good example. Coming into this fight I wanted Ortiz to put the trash talking Mayweather in his place. I wasn't 100% sure he could but I was rooting for him to pull it off. The other reason I was rooting for Ortiz was that I wanted to see the guy redeem himself. I was hoping he would prove once and for all, that his blatant quitting in the Marcos Maidana fight was an anomaly, just something that happened, a one time quirky act. I thought that Ortiz understood what true character was, and that he was going to work like hell to prove himself. Maybe position himself along side some of the great fighters of the past.

Us guys from the West Coast and the L.A. fight scene are a proud bunch. We love our fighters and their exploits passionately. We have as rich a history in the sport as any town in the country, or the world too for that matter. We cherish and defend that history. The fighters that were either born here or came here to live and fight, range from the completely mediocre to the legendary. They trained at the Main Street Gym, the Teamsters Gym, the Hoover Street Gym and Canto Robledo's backyard gym. The names of these fighters stand with the best from anywhere in the world when it comes to courage, heart and fair play and they include fighters such as Manny Ortiz, Gil Cadilli, Kenny Teran, Art Aragon, Enrique Bolanos,Lauro Salas, Denny Moyer, Mando Ramos, Hedgeman Lewis, Randy Shields, Mando Muniz, Bobby Chacon, Danny "Little Red" Lopez, Rick Farris, , the Fighting Irish Brothers Jerry and Mike Quarry, Frankie Baltazar, Tony Baltazar, and more recently, Sugar Shane Mosley and Oscar De La Hoya. I couldn't begin to list them all.

Guys like Ruben Olivares, Chucho Castillo, Jesus Pimental came north from Mexico to lay it on the line at the Olympic Auditorium and the Forum because they knew L.A. was a fight town like no other and appreciated a fighter worth his salt. Art Hafey headed south from Canada to Southern California, to jump into the midst of what has come to be known as the "West Coast Featherweight Wars". The West Coast has been a hot bed of boxing for decades and L.A. has been the epicenter of it all. We don't care what nationality you are, what color you are or what your religion is. If you can fight and are willing, and can take it as good as you can give, than you are our kind of fighter. it's as simple as that. We'll be with you all the way.

Then along comes Victor Ortiz, wanting to stand tall with all the rest. Quit against Maidana and was given a second chance at a career. Positioned himself with one of the two pound for pound best fighters in the world, and was making a fight of it. Mayweather began picking up some steam and the fighter who has ironically come to be known as "Vicious" began to crumble. Ortiz had Mayweather against the ropes and was actually landing some good shots, when for reasons known only to him, he decided to take the low road with a headbutt so obviously intentionally a blind man would have had no trouble seeing it. Anomaly? No, lack of character, lack of true courage, a complete lack of fair play.

Am I being too harsh here? I don't think so. Given that Ortiz had a shot at redemption and spit in our eyes in the process, I think he's getting off easy. The crowd at the Staples Center, judging by the boos for Mayweather seem to be excusing Ortiz' behavior. Mayweather did what any sane fighter would and should do when facing a man who has already shown himself to be a cheater. I would lay some pretty good money that many of the same people that think Floyd sucker punched Ortiz, were jumping for joy a few years back when, Marco Antonio Barrera, like Mayweather, took matters into his own hands and grabbed Nassem Hamed in a half nelson and rammed him face first into the ring post. I don't recall ever hearing of one fan that thought Barrera was in the wrong. Neither was Floyd Mayweather in the wrong. But for the headbutt there would have been no controversy or knockout, at least not that particular knockout.

To borrow quote from Dorothy and "The Wizard of Oz", "Victor, you're not in Kansas anymore!"

Yohan Blake runs second fastest 200m ever.

Once the Track & Field World Championships ended in Daegu, South Korea, interest in the sport vanished as quickly as Usain Bolt's hopes of winning the 100m in Daegu. But the season remained competitive well beyond the championships. No more was that evident than in Brussels, Belgium, for the second Diamond League event (the first was in Zurich, Switzerland) since the championships wrapped.

Usain Bolt recovered in the 100m, winning in a world-leading 9.76 seconds, but was overshadowed by his country man, training partner and the man who became the 100m World Champion in Bolt's absence, Yohan Blake. Blake blew by Walter Dix around the last stretch of curve to win the 200m in a WL time of 19.26. How fast was he going? Well Dix, no slow mo himself, was a distant second in a personal best time of 19.53s. Blake surpasses former world record holder Michael Johnson (19.32) as the second fastest man in the history of that race behind Bolt's 19.19.

The U.S. has no answers for this crop of sprinters springing up in the tiny island of Jamaica. And with the London Olympics less than a year away, and the U.S. well-documented problems with baton exchanges, it's impossible to imagine the U.S. posing a threat to the Jamaicans in the 4x100m relay. Besides Dix and a healthy Tyson Gay, there isn't much promise from anyone else to make the 100m final (Gatlin has been inconsistent since finishing second at the U.S. trials prior to Daegu.) The bigger story would be who would make the Jamaicans final squad (Asafa Powell, Nesta Carter and Michael Frater top the crowd of sprinters who would contend for the final two spots.)

For some reason, I seem to be having issues with embedding videos, which I used to be able to do with ease. If anyone has solutions beyond copying and pasting the embedded info on here, please let me know. But if you're interested in watching the race, click here for it.

Mayweather vs. Ortiz. Scratch that. How 'bout Mayweather vs. Merchant?

There's no way of knowing, but I'm sure of it. Floyd Mayweather Jr. would have won the fight against Victor Ortiz Jr. last night anyway.

If you didn't happen to catch the fight because you've chosen to wait until it debuts on HBO next week, then you missed out on one of the most entertaining moments in boxing. No it had nothing to do with Mayweather's controversial knockout in the fourth round. It happened during the post fight interview with the ubiquitous Larry Merchant peppering Mayweather about the knockout, which I will get to shortly. Feeling pressured by the much older Merchant, Mayweather lashed out at his interviewer, accusing Merchant of being biased against him. Then just as suddenly, still on live TV, Mayweather expressed his wish to have HBO fire Merchant, who has been the ringside interviewer at major fights since before I was born. It doesn't end there. Amazingly, Merchant, who I've always maintained talks too slowly to still be an active ringside interviewer, didn't back down, telling Mayweather, "I wish I was 50 years younger, I'd have kicked your (rhymes with bass.)" Ashamedly, I found myself cheering for another fight just to see the embarrassing finish to the side plot.

The Merchant-Mayweather debacle could have been a publicity stunt on Mayweather's end to embrace the hostility he earned with his win, but the conclusion to the actual fight was not. So many friends have Facebooked, twitted and (insert any other social media network you can think of) their opinions about the fight, and the majority sided with Ortiz. After all, Mayweather took a cheap shot right? Wrong.

It all happened too quickly that I never noticed how far into the fourth round the fight had gone. But somewhere in the middle of that round, Ortiz had backed Mayweather into the ropes and seemed to be earning a few points, enough to possibly claim that round. Suddenly, and in one of the worst incidents of headbutting I have ever seen in a fight, Ortiz rose from his crouched stance and deliberately headbutted Mayweather. Fight was stopped and ref Joe Cortez deducted a point from Ortiz. No harm done; until he motioned for the two fighters to approach the center of the ring and touch gloves. They touched gloves and Ortiz broke away from customary behavior to extend a hug to Mayweather as well, as if to suggest his headbutting was unintentional. Yeah right. Mayweather, probably still smarting, noticed Cortez was distracted and threw a left hook that connected perfectly with Ortiz' cheekbones. And then a right that dropped Ortiz to the mat. Fight over.

I don't think people realized what had happened until the replay showed what appeared to be a cheap shot at an unsuspecting opponent. I would have loved to see the fight end in a different way, but I don't see why Mayweather should take the blame for the results. Both Ortiz and Cortez share the blame in the bizarre conclusion.

If Ortiz hadn't taken his cheap shot, the fight would never have stopped. But not only did he stop his own momentum with that stupid decision, he lost his focus. You are Ortiz. You have been preparing for a chance to rejoin the elite of the sport after suffering an embarrassing loss that almost destroyed your career a few years back. You don't fall asleep until you are in the changing room post match. You don't show any weakness or sympathy by hugging your opponent mid-fight. Merely touching the gloves would have sufficed. He got caught up in the moment of proving his silly headbutt was unintentional that he allowed one of the cunningest fighters in the sport to catch him unguarded. Protect yourself at all times; that's the fundamental rule of boxing. In one of four episodes of HBO's 24/7, chronicling the two boxers' pre-fight preparations, one of the sons of Ortiz' trainer, Danny Garcia, labeled Mayweather a dirty fighter who wins with dodgy tactics. So why wasn't Ortiz prepared to protect himself from any possible dirty tactics?

Cortez shares the blame because he broke away from what is the norm when a fight is paused. I thought he gave a slight signal to resume that may not have been noticed by most. He should have checked with the ringside and confirmed the time left in the round before urging the fighters to touch gloves. Once he realized his mistake, he took his eyes away from the most important people in that arena and focused on the wrong ones. You cannot make those types of mistakes in big fights like this one.

In the end, hate him or love him, Mayweather's winning streak continues. Thus, his despicable behavior outside the ring is sure to continue. Until he can be stopped, there's no reason why he needs to remain quiet. Undoubtedly, there's bound to be reignited talk for a Mayweather-Pacquaio fight. I just hope there can be a compromise to make this fight happen. Boxing needs this fight to happen. Otherwise, we're stuck analyzing possible fights between elder statesmen who can barely hold onto a microphone versus egomaniac boxers who talk more about how much they stand to make from a fight than actual strategy needed to win the fight.

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez vs Alfonso Gomez

Photos by Gene Blevins/Hoganphotos
By Randy De La O

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Alfonso Gomez will be fighting on the undercard (sort of) tonight. Alvarez vs Gomez will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Their fight is the main event at that sight but on the HBO PPV their fight will be on the undercard, so to speak. I think it will be a good fight.

I happen to like both of these guys, though I do think at this point in his career, regardless of his age, "Canelo" is a bit overrated and over protected, but that's not his fault (yet). He still needs a lot of work, especially on defense but that should come with time.

Gomez is a guy you just can't help but like. I mean, how can you not root for Gomez? Now here is a guy that, more than anyone else, has made the most of his appearance on NBC's boxing reality show, "The Contender", a few years back, and here is a guy that could have griped to Kingdom Come when, after beating Peter Manfredo Jr on the fair and square, he was forced to fight him a second time after another contestant left the show and Manfredo was called back. Manfredo won the second fight. If they ended their fights with one and one, why was Manfredo allowed to fight Sergio Mora for the Contender title? The fair and honest thing to do would have been to make it two out of three. Gomez got screwed. I'm not saying Gomez would have beaten Mora but I do think he's the one that should have been given the chance. I'm digressing, I know, but I had to get that off my chest.

Gomez to be fair, is a limited fighter and most likely would have languished in obscurity if not for the "Contender", but it's his huge heart that has made me and just about everyone else a fan. He's my kind of fighter. He's always plugging away, always trying, always giving a 100%. I'm hoping that somewhere along the line, maybe tonight, he'll have a "Rocky" like moment in his career. He's fought and beat a few good guys, like the late Arturo Gotti, though to be fair to Gotti, he was at the end of a great career. He never fought again. He's stepped into the ring with Miguel Cotto, Jesus Soto Karass and Jose Luis Castillo. Castillo, like Gotti, was caught at the end of his career. Gomez is a deserving guy.

That's not to say that Canelo isn't a deserving guy. Like Gomez, I think he has his limitations but with the backing this guy has, he might as well have won a gold medal. His career is moving along like a juggernaut against mediocre opponents and he is not quite 100% deserving of his place in the upper echelon of boxing, someday maybe, just not yet. Still, his future looks bright.

Tonight, I'm throwing common sense, logic and conventional wisdom out the window and I'm going with my heart. It seems like the right thing to do! I'll be rooting for Gomez.

Star Power: Mayweather vs Ortiz

Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Victor Ortiz

Photo courtesy of HBO Boxing and Will Hart
By Randy De La O

Victor Ortiz. will be defending his WBC Welterweight title this Saturday, September 17, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, against Floyd Mayweather Jr..The fight will be shown on HBO PPV.

I would like to see Ortiz win this one but I'm not entirely sure he can. He looked good against Andre Berto in his last fight, and while Berto is a decent enough fighter and was/is considered one of the up and coming stars of this generation, he is not Floyd Mayweather Jr, not by a long shot. Logic and Common sense says that if he couldn't handle Marcos Maidana he won't be able to handle Mayweather. Still, there has to be a part of Ortiz that has vowed to himself, regardless of circumstances or opponent, that he will never again quit. That's just speculation on my part but it's one that makes sense. Hoever he did it, Ortiz has positioned himself for a fight with one of the two best pound for pound fighters in the world. He has a huge mountain to climb. The time for talk is over.

Mayweather on the other hand, regardless of what you or I might think of him, has yet to be beaten and has yet to show signs of aging. I don't think Ortiz will have anything new to show him. Mayweather has seen it all before. However, he has not been without some close calls. His first win against Jose Luis Castillo was considered somewhat of a robbery but he did removed all doubt in the second fight. He earned a split decision in his 2007 fight against a tired and aging Ocar De La Hoya. During that fight Oscar had some great moments but just could not sustain it. When Oscar used his jab he had his way with Mayweather. That may just be the blueprint for beating him, that and a truckload of intestinal fortitude.

My hope for tomorrow night? That Victor Ortiz reaches deep inside of himself and finds it within himself, win, lose or draw, to produce the fight of his life. I'd like to see the kid redeem himself.

Louie Burke: Abie Han Update

By Louie Burke

After a number of opponents pulled out of fighting Abie Han tonight, Eloy Suarez accepted the challenge, but he was told by the Texas Athletic Commission that his boxing license had expired.

Despite trying to convince the commission that he had a current license he was denied the opportunity. After being told he would not fight, he was not heard of from his trainers again. The commission then found out that he was licensed but had filled out the paper work, using his full legal name, throwing off the system that lists the licensees. But Suarez was gone, no where to be found and the Abie Hans fight was canceled.

Hopefully Top Rank will be able to find another spot for him in the near future.

Full text of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's Malaysia Day message.

My beloved Malaysians,

1. Praise be to God, with His permission and kindness, we are able to observe the 48th anniversary of the formation of Malaysia as an independent, sovereign, democratic, peaceful and prosperous nation.

2. The story of Malaysia is colourful indeed. We have evolved from a low-income agricultural country at birth into a moderately high-income modern industrialised nation today, as a result of systematic planning and sustainable implementation. Although our success has been monumental and most significant, it does not give us any reason to stop trying, feel satisfied and comfortable or take it easy.

3. For the continued survival and prosperity of the people in the highly competitive world of today, let us redouble our efforts to improve the national competitiveness through creativity and innovation and by stretching our resources in creating new wealth based on independent entrepreneurship. It may not be able to realise all these objectives without national unity, peace, stability and harmony.

My beloved Malaysians,

4. Reflecting on history, when the country achieved independence 54 years ago and became Malaysia six years thence with Sabah and Sarawak, many local people and foreign observers questioned whether a new nation, with half the population living below the poverty line, having a demographic diversity of unusual complexity, separated by the South China Sea and threatened with a communist uprising, could remain intact as a nation state, let alone be successful.

5. Evidently, Malaysia's achievements thus far, garnered through trial and error, were destined to be full of challenges. Looking at history, like a miracle in the early age of a newly independent nation, the challenges became all the more acute with the early adoption of a system and philosophy of national administration based on parliamentary democracy, constitutional monarchy and a federation when the acculturation process had yet to mature.

6. Prior to independence, the people of the 13 states which came together to form Malaysia never had the opportunity to choose a ruling government or even the pattern of its administration. Their existence was merely as citizens of colonial states accorded limited political privileges at the discretion of the administrators. Certainly, this is not a genuine political right arising from the citizenship of an independent and sovereign state.

7. Before independence, the people were given limited opportunity to choose their representatives, first in the municipal elections of 1952 and then in the election of some members of the federal legislative council in 1955. It was only after 1959, following independence, that the people began to be given the full right and responsibility to elect all members of the Dewan Rakyat and state legislative assemblies with the absolute discretion in determining the party that would form the government.

My beloved Malaysians,

8. Of course, we should be thankful because, from time to time, we were able to overcome every internal and external impediment which threatened democracy and personal freedom, such as the communist uprising, confrontation against the formation of Malaysia, racial riots, economic recession, religious extremism or racial chauvinism through prudent, democratic action based on the principles of supremacy of the constitution and rule of law.

9. It should also be remembered that during that period it never at all occurred to the government to switch the existing system of parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy to any anti-democratic system, no matter how tough the challenges faced. As recorded in the chronology of the country, owing to the May 13 tragedy, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, acting on the advice of the Prime Minister then in accordance with Article 150 of the Federal Constitution, declared an emergency.

10. One of the effects arising from the declaration of the 1969 emergency was that the uncompleted election process in Sabah and Sarawak was suspended. The subsequent development was that the Dewan Rakyat elections were carried out within a period of approximately 20 months later and the system of Parliamentary Democracy was revived when the country was stable again.

11. Nevertheless, the late Tun Abdul Razak, as the Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister then, who was entrusted to head the National Operations Council or MAGERAN, with absolute executive and legislative powers, never had the intention to retain the power longer than necessary.

12. It was abundantly clear that the late Tun together with his colleagues then were fully aware that the limitless extraordinary powers that they held could not be made a habitude for the sake of our beloved country's future. Instead, they appreciated that the absolute power was merely a trust to curb and prevent any tragedy and chaos.

My beloved Malaysians,

13. In fact, as a country that practices parliamentary democracy, the power to determine which political party would form the government, whether at the federal or state level, lies absolutely and without exception in the hands of the people. After more than 50 years of independence and almost five decades of Malaysia's formation, we find that the experience, maturity and wisdom of the people in the country in choosing a government that could ensure that the future they aspired for could not be denied by anyone else.

14. In fact, I have often pointed out that the era where the government knew everything and owned a monopoly on wisdom has long gone. The revolution in the fields of information technology, development in communication and sophistication in transportation had opened up competition as well as a wide and dynamic comparison in the ideas market.

15. Currently, public access to all levels of education is expanding in line with the corpus of knowledge that they possess. At the same time, sustainable economic growth, the reduction in the poverty rate and the social engineering initiatives and their effectiveness, have succeeded in raising the standard of living and created a significant middle class. Now, the preference and requirements of Malaysians have undergone massive changes compared to four or five decades ago.

16. Moving further ahead, administering a nation that emerged from the independence driven by the wishes of the people, the government is now committed towards upholding the system of Parliamentary Democracy, Constitutional Monarchy, rule of law, the federation philosophy and principles of checks and balances between the three branches of the government.

My beloved Malaysians,

17. As many of you know, except for the emergency resulting from the (Indonesian) Confrontation of 1964 which has been implicitly revoked, all proclamations of emergency before this are still in force. Hence, realising the changing realities, taking the pulse of the nation and feeling the restlessness of the people aspiring for a more open Malaysia with a dynamic democracy where the views, ideas and concerns of the masses are given greater attention so that our system would be comparable to the other democracies of the world that are based on the philosophy "of the people, by the people, and for the people", the government will present a motion, under Clause 3 Article 150 of the Federal Constitution, to the two houses of Parliament for the three proclamations of emergency to cease being in force. It is time for Malaysia to forge ahead with a new paradigm based on new hope and not be constrained by nostalgia for the past.

18. In our nation building, while facing extraordinary circumstances threatening the security of the country and the well-being of the people, sometimes measures outside the norms of democracy had been called for. For example, preventive detention. Prudence in handling terrorism calls for preventive measures to protect innocent lives and property. This is a universally accepted truth.

19. From an Islamic perspective, this (preventive principle) is contained in the Syariah law aimed at protecting religion, lives, minds, ancestry and dignity, and property. The discipline of Syariah methodology deals at length with the need to prevent evil. One principle states that the ruler was entrusted to make a decision for the good of the many.

20. This is not anything strange, unusual or isolated. Advanced democratic nations like the United States and United Kingdom had formulated special legislation to handle terrorism after the September 11 tragedy.

21. The checks and balances that must exist in a modern democracy are between national security and personal freedom. Finding the right balance is the duty and responsibility of a government whose highest objective is the wellbeing of the people.

22. For example, the freedom of expression guaranteed in the Federal Constitution does not mean a right to slander and stoke the fires of hate. The government is also responsible, to take another example, of preventing anyone in a packed stadium raising a false alarm of a bomb. An out-of-control freedom like this will cause panic leading to injury and loss of lives.

My beloved Malaysians,

23. I promised in the maiden speech I made when I took over as the country's Prime Minister on April 3, 2009, that the Internal Security Act (ISA) 1960 will be reviewed comprehensively. As such, I would like to announce on this historic night that the Internal Security Act (ISA) 1960 will be abolished.

24. As a means of preventing subversive activities, organised terrorism and crime to maintain peace and public order, two new pieces of legislation will be formulated under Article 149 of the Federal Constitution. Basically, these laws will be aimed at maintaining peace and wellbeing.

25. Above all, the government will ensure that the rights of those involved will be safeguarded. Legislation formulated will take into consideration fundamental rights and freedom based on the Federal Constitution. The new laws will provide for a substantially shorter duration of police custody and further detention can only be made with a court order, except laws pertaining to terrorism which will remain under the jurisdiction of the minister.

26. On the other hand, the government also gives its commitment that no individual will be arrested merely on the point of political ideology. In general, the power to extend the detention period will shift from the executive to judiciary, except for the laws pertaining to terrorism.

27. In this context, besides abolishing the Internal Security Act (ISA) 1960, the government will also abolish the Banishment Act 1959 and review several other laws to ensure that they meet current requirements. Hence, we will not hesitate to amend or abolish laws that are no longer relevant.

28. The comprehensive review will involve the Restricted Residence Act 1933 and the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984 where the annual renewal principle will be abolished and replaced with the issuance of a licence until and unless revoked. The government will also review Section 27 of the Police Act 1967 by taking into consideration the provision under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution on freedom of assembly, but with a principle that is strongly against street demonstration. Nevertheless, the approval to assemble will be given in accordance with methods that will be outlined later and after taking into consideration international norms.

My beloved Malaysians,

29. As a country, Malaysia and its citizens are at a crossroads. The choice we make today will determine the fate and the future facade of Malaysia, the motherland which we will pass on to our children and the generations to come. The question is, can we rise beyond, and challenge, conventional wisdom that we as plural Malaysians, with varying economic status and political ideologies, can come to a consensus to not to bow and give in to the ember of hatred and suspicions, which will surely drag us to the valley of disgrace. On the other hand, come and let us power a future that is filled with hope and dignity.

30. Let us have faith, that it is a strength and not a weakness to put our trust in the wisdoms of Malaysians in determining our future. If we take this as a mistake, what then is the meaning of our achievement today, what is the use of planning the country's development in a structured way since merdeka, what is the use of spending most of the country's resources each year to give access to quality education to the people, to free the people from the clasp of poverty, to build physical infrastructure and world-class information communication technology?

31. The answer is clear, that is, the measures which I have just announced are a precursor to an orderly and prudent political transformation. This is an important and necessary complement to the initiatives in the economic field and public delivery which the government has formulated and implemented since more than two years back in the effort to move towards becoming a modern and progressive nation.

32. What is certain is that time is not too early neither it is too late; this is the most opportune time for us to make and implement these major changes. We are absolutely aware that, although some my think it is risky, we are doing this for our survival after 50 years of independence, after nearly five decades of Malaysia's nationhood. We are indeed galloping forth towards our destination to become a full-fledged developed nation.

My beloved Malaysians,

33. Finally, I would like to stress in no uncertain term that Malaysia which we dream of and one that we are currently building, is Malaysia which practices functional and inclusive democracy, where peace and public order are safeguarded in line with the supremacy of the Constitution, the rule of law and respect for basic human rights and individual rights. For Malaysia, let's do our best and leave the rest to God.

When lives are lost...

This year marked the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of more than 3,000 people. Orchestrated by former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, four commercial planes were hijacked in the early hours of the fateful day in 2001 and crashed into the twin World Trade Center towers in New York City, the Pentagon in D.C., and an empty field in Shanksville, Pa. (reportedly headed to either the White House or Capitol building, also in D.C.) Since then, the approach to security in the U.S. has never been the same. I still remember where I was when the attacks happened. I was woken up by my mother in time to watch the second plane smash into the second Twin Tower live while sitting in the living room of our 15th floor high-rise in Downtown Miami. I didn't personally know anyone who died on that fateful day, but like many, I will forever remember the events of that day and how it changed my life.

There were all kinds of ties between Sept. 11 and the sports world then, as there were in this year's commemoration. Tennis player Serena Williams dedicated her finals match at the 2011 U.S. Open, played on that Sunday, to the victims. New York Jets players donned navy blue T-shirts with the words "Never Forgotten" written on the back for warmups on opening night for the NFL season. But long before all the commemorations took place nationwide, in the wee hours of the morning, there was a different kind of sports tie to 9/11. Tayshana Murphy, a promising basketball star was shot to death at her Harlem apartment in New York City. Reports suggest the 18-year-old was a victim of mistaken identity, shot because she was dressed in similar clothes as a boy who was involved in an altercation with some men at a different housing project. Whatever the truth may be, Murphy's life was cut shot by an unnecessary act of violence on a day when the world mourned the victims of another unnecessary act of violence.

Incidentally, Murphy's death was exactly a week from the stabbing death of another female basketball player at Florida A&M University, where I obtained my master's in broadcast journalism. Shannon Washington died from stab wounds to her neck, allegedly caused by her girlfriend of three years Starquineshia Palmer, who was visiting Washington from Bradenton, Fla. I was a sports reporter for FAMU TV 20 and covered the women's basketball team. I never knew nor interviewed Washington, but felt connected to her somehow because of my involvement with the team. Just as I felt connected to the victims of 9/11, though I knew no one.

Watching one of many 9/11 specials that aired this weekend, I learned about the families of victims. One wife of a firefighter who died trying to save people, talked about how her husband chose Sept. 11 as their wedding date because of the significance behind it. 9/11 makes one think of the most important number to call when in need of rescue. But what was supposed to be the couple's happiest day turned out to be her worst day as well when he was killed. Other stories included several passengers of the United 93 flight, regarded as heroes for attacking the hijackers and preventing them from hitting their original target. One thing many of the stories had in common was future plans, hopes or dreams cut shot as a result of the tragedy in the split of a few seconds. I don't know what Washington's future plan was beyond FAMU, but Murphy's dream was to get her mother out of the projects; a dream she would never get to fulfill.

Why am I sharing this? Because the deaths of these two basketball players, and the 10th anniversary of 9/11, reminded me of something I became fully aware of after the original attacks. Have an idea what you envision your future to be like, but live for today. I've been so caught up in worrying about my future (those close to me know exactly what I've been fretting about) and not living enough for today that I forgot to remember that when lives are lost, their goals, hopes and dreams, for the most part, are gone forever as well.

R.I.P. to the many lives lost on 9/11 and to deceased victims of violence.

Tropical Island Paradise superyacht

This superyacht - dubbed the ‘Tropical island Paradise’ – has been designed by British boat builders Yacht Island Design.

The 90m Tropical Island Paradise design has a theme that is centred around a secluded island paradise, with elements inspired by the islands of the Caribbean.

The main exterior deck is a private beach “cove” with a voluminous ocean view swimming pool located forward that is fed by a stream emanating from a cascading waterfall on the volcano further aft.

The main deck is a secluded beach ‘cove’ of cabanas surrounding a massive ocean view swimming pool.

Behind these cabanas there is a bar area, communal seating area and an area for al fresco dining.

Inside the huge, towering volcano is a cinema, library, games room, gym, spa and VIP suites – including an owners pad spread over two decks.

The exterior of yacht was designed to give the impression of waves breaking around a volcanic island, whilst maintaining the look of a contemporary yacht design.

The lavish yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests – and can travel along at a top speed of 15 knots.

Superyacht Adastra a 42.5m Power Trimaran

Described by Boat International as “one of the world’s most amazing super yachts, that could spell the future for efficient long range cruising”, the striking 42.5m Trimaran Adastra is currently under construction at McConaghy Boats in China.

This one-off trimaran designed by John Shuttleworth is being built for Hong Kong clients Anto and Elaine Marden with interstellar voyages in mind.

Adastra’s 16 metre beam creates a spacious saloon area on the main deck which offers superb views through a panoramic window and accommodates a lounge area, dining table, and navigation station.

A forward facing door through the saloon window gives easy access to a large sunbed on the foredeck.

The aft deck has a sofa and bar area to port and a dining area to starboard, further aft of this there is space for a 4.9 metre tender and directly below is a garage which can store a 3.1 metre tender.

The garage door has been designed to fold out and create a large dive platform. Extra space has been created below deck by slightly flaring the central hull just above the waterline.

This area has been split into two sections with a full-width master cabin located aft with access from the deck saloon, and two further guest cabins, accommodation for the crew, and the galley located forward of the engine compartment.

Adastra offers comfortable accommodation for nine guests and up to six crew members.

The main helm station, which has seating for two, is positioned in a raised pilot house situated between the aft deck and the saloon area and forms part of the cross beam structure.

The Superstructure is carbon fibre with Nomex honeycomb core, the hull is Glass/Kevlar foam sandwich and the interior is light weight oak cabinetry using honeycomb panels.

To help reduce weight, virtually every aspect of the boat is custom built. This includes carbon fibre hatches, portlights, ladders and even hinges, which are all built specifically for the vessel.

Most Expensive Yacht Charter

When it comes to the world’s most expensive yacht charters, it’s hard to top Camper & Nicholsons‘ superyacht Moonlight II (ex Alysia).

At $900,000 per week she costs more for seven days at sea than most yachts pull down for a whole month.

At 85.3 metres she also ranks as one of the world’s largest charter yachts, with a steel hull and superstructure with aluminum deckhouses.

Access is easy via passarelle or the wide teak swimming platform. Once on board life unfolds over five spectacular decks.

Thirty-six guests are looked after by thirty-four crew and there is room to entertain at the most lavish level.

Situated on the Upper Deck, the master suite measures over 122 square metres. The bedroom itself has 180° panoramic windows with a door to a private deck.

An enormous Californian king-sized bed faces a 42″ retractable plasma television with Creston control console.

Male and female dressing rooms, twin Jacuzzi bath, private study and a twin stateroom complete this remarkable suite.

And, just to ensure you feel entirely at peace, your bodyguard can be comfortably housed in the adjacent twin cabin.

The VIP suite is situated on the Bridge Deck and includes a separate television lounge and study with a double sofa bed.

Another plasma television screen faces the large super king-size bed. A spacious Michelangelo marble bathroom has separate shower, Jacuzzi bath and WC areas.

Alysia’s additional guest suites include eight super king-size doubles and seven twin staterooms, including one equipped for special needs.

They are furnished to the highest standards with limed oak paneling, limestone architraves, silk embroidered counterpanes, sofas, a writing desk, titling LCD screen television with DVD and large marble bathrooms.

You and your guests can use the elevator to explore the five guest decks aboard, which include a sundeck that provides privacy, intimacy and spectacular views over your domain.

At one end, the heli-pad converts into a circular sunbathing terrace, at the other, is a Jacuzzi surrounded by sun beds.

Other amenities offered onboard include a movie theater, temperature-controlled 500-bottle wine cellar, saloon with grand piano, hair and beauty salon, gym, children’s play room and a business center.

With a range of over 7,000 nautical miles, she’s capable of crossing the Atlantic, navigating the Panama Canal and reaching the west coast of the U.S. and Mexico.

Tell Me No!

Reaching for my dreams
And you're so quick to say what I can't do
You criticize my actions
But I don't see you standing in my shoes
I'm going the wrong way
I'm doing the wrong things
Every word just gives me fuel
So come on come on come on come on come on come on

[Chorus:]
And tell me no
And I'll show you I can
And tell me no
I sink my feet right in
Tell me no
Just tell me that I can't win
Come on
I'm sure I'll prove you wrong
Come on and go
Tell me no

Every step I take you're right there trying to block my next move
If you're making me feel bad, then tell me then do you feel good
I'm just human and all I'm doing is what my heart tells me I should
So come on come on come on come on come on come on

[Chorus]

No no no no no no no
You motivates me more and more
And I think it's time that you know
Giving me something to afford
And I can't wait for the day
I can rock things in your place
I ain't gonna stop til I'm done
I reach the top I'm the No.1
For everytime you try and tell me no
Oh you makes me keep on keep it all

[Chorus x2]

What should matter more in sports: money or winning?

About three weeks ago, I wrote about Camerounian soccer star Samuel Eto'o's decision to leave Italian club Inter Milan for Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala; a move which was purely motivated by money. The deal made Eto'o the highest paid soccer player by more than $10 million.

Now Ghana's Asamoah Gyan is following in his fellow African's footsteps by leaving English Premiership League team Sunderland on loan to Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates. Sunderland hasn't exactly been a marquee team in the EPL, but Gyan was notably its star, leading the team with 10 goals scored in his first year. For now, the transfer is only effective for this season, but Sunderland manager Steve Bruce says he doesn't expect Gyan to return to the team.

Asamoah Gyan
At 25, Gyan is much younger– in soccer life, make that a lot–than Eto'o and had recently gained popularity following his impressive performance for the Black Stars in last year's World Cup. Gyan, despite missing a game-winning penalty that would've given the Black Stars a historic spot in the semifinals of the World Cup–a first for any African team in the history of the tournament–was Ghana's leading man. I stood less than 40 feet away from Gyan as he broke down in tears and was consoled by his teammates after Ghana lost the ensuing penalty shootout to Uruguay at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa last July. But it was obvious that his stock was set to rise in the soccer world regardless.

His career part seemed to be headed upward when he joined Sunderland, but I can't help but question his decision to leave the most competitive league for a non-existent one. The UAE? Even Eto'o's Russian league garners mild respect in the soccer world compared to the UAE. Gyan is expected to earn about $9.5 million with Al Ain, and the projection is that the move would be converted into a permanent one. It's an almost death sentence for Gyan's career, which could conclude without being a part of any major soccer title if he retires at Al Ain. He may be able to attract attention from major teams again if he performs as well as he did in South Africa, at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. But we're a long way from June 2014 and there's no guarantee that he'd be in top form then.

I understood Eto'o's decision to go with the money because he had proven himself on the biggest stage with three Champions League titles. English player David Beckham and French national Thierry Henry made similar decisions to join the U.S. Major Soccer League when their career paths took a decline. But Gyan's is very different. Most soccer players wait a lifetime to play against the elite and some never do, but Gyan is throwing away a potential memorable career by following the money.

So the question is Gyan doing the right thing by taking advantage of his high profile to make as much money as possible or should he have put winning ahead of career earnings in his decision?
